Section 6029 - Apprenticeship Work Processes

Each apprentice is required to spend at least a total of 3,600 hours performing tasks within all work process categories combined, and at least 24 qualifying months of experience as stated in Section 6022. The apprentice shall complete at least the minimum number of hours specified below in each individual work process category.

(a) Correctional Officer (California Department of Corrections [CDC]) Work Processes (2,400 hours):

(1) Maintain Security1,000 hours.
(2) Supervision of Inmates/Noncustody800 hours.
(3) Escorting/Transporting200 hours.
(4) ReportWriting/Recordkeeping/ Communications200 hours.
(5) Additional Experience covering other activities related to being a Correctional Officer, but not covered under the other work processes200 hours.

(b) Correctional Counselor I (CDC) Work Processes (2,403 hours):

(1) Inmates Classification1,054 hours.
(2) Report Writing224 hours.
(3) General Counseling402 hours.
(4) General Casework483 hours.
(5) Court Order Service42 hours.
(6) Additional Experience covering other activities related to being a Correctional Counselor I, but not covered under the other work processes198 hours.

(c) Parole Agent I (CDC), Adult Parole (2,400 hours):

(1) Supervision of Parolees600 hours.
(2) Report Writing/Record Keeping500 hours.
(3) Investigations600 hours.
(4) Arrests400 hours.
(5) Additional Experience covering other activities related to being a Parole Agent I, but not covered under the other work processes300 hours.

(d) Medical Technical Assistant, CDC (2,400 hours):

(1) Administration of Medical Treatment700 hours.
(2) Hospital/Clinic Procedures700 hours.
(3) Maintains Security and Discipline300 hours.
(4) Escorting/Transporting150 hours.
(5) Supervision of Inmates and Special Handling of Unusual Inmates200 hours.
(6) Report Writing/Record Keeping150 hours.
(7) Additional Experience covering other activities related to being a Medical Technical Assistant, but not covered under the other work processes200 hours.

(e) Medical Technical Assistant, CYA (2,120 hours):

(1) Searching and Securing50 hours.
(2) Escorting and Transporting100 hours.
(3) Supervising Wards400 hours.
(4) Supervising Non-Ward Movements and Visitors50 hours.
(5) Writing Reports and Correspondence150 hours.
(6) Crisis Intervention50 hours.
(7) Hospital Procedures/Medical Treatment1,300 hours.
(8) Additional Assignments covering other activities related to being a Medical Technical Assistant, but not covered under the other work processes20 hours.

(f) Firefighter, Correctional Facility (3,440 hours):

(1) Supervising Inmates300 hours.
(2) Report Writing/Record Keeping/ Correspondence400 hours.
(3) Orientation to Institution Programs200 hours.
(4) Firefighter Safety400 hours.
(5) Fire Apparatus, Driver/Operator500 hours.
(6) Firefighting Equipment900 hours.
(7) Fire Prevention/Investigation, Inspection300 hours.

(9) Emergency Care of Sick and Injured240 hours.

(g) Parole Agent I, CYA (Institution), (2,370 hours):

(1) On-the-job and Formalized Training to Youth Correctional Counselors200 hours.
(2) Monitor Casework Function of Youth Correctional Counselors500 hours.
(3) Participate in Case Conferences300 hours.
(4) Prepare Cases for and Present Cases to the Youthful Offender Parole Board250 hours.
(5) Counsel Wards in Personal, Institutional, and Family Problems200 hours.

(2) Service Provision including employment, educational, and vocational assistance to parolees, counseling for parolees and their families, and assistance to crime victims450 hours.
(3) Report Writing/Record Keeping250 hours.
(4) Investigations/Case Conference Youthful Offender Parole Board (YOPB)550 hours.
(5) Additional Experience covering other activities related to being a field Parole Agent, but not covered under the other work processes200 hours.

(i) Youth Correctional Counselor, CYA (2,110 hours):

(1) Security and Operations250 hours.
(2) Escorting and Transporting Wards, Equipment, and Evidence100 hours.
(3) Supervision of Groups and Individuals (Wards and Public)1,050 hours.
