Section 6 AAC 25.300 - Selection of names of candidates for ballot placement(a) The director will establish a method to be used for determining the ballot placement of candidates for the primary, special primary, special, and general elections using the procedures set out in this section.(b) The order for placement on the ballot will be established by the random drawing of the 26 letters of the alphabet by the director.(c) One drawing will be held under (b) of this section for both types of race. The results of the drawing for state representative and state senator will be recorded in writing and certified by the director. The certified results will remain on file with the division for 24 months following the election.(d) For each type of race on a ballot, the names of candidates whose last names start with the same letter will be placed on the ballot according to regular alphabetical order, under that letter. For example, the names of all candidates in a race whose last names begin with the letter "M" will be alphabetized under that letter and will appear on the ballot as "Metzgar, Miller, Munson."(e) For each type of race, placement on the ballot for candidates sharing the same last name will be determined by those candidates' first name and, if necessary, middle initial. For example, under the "S" placement, "Smith, John A." will appear before "Smith, Walter W." and "Smith, John A." will appear before "Smith, John L."(f) The director will rotate the order of placement of the names of candidates for governor, lieutenant governor, United States Senator, United States Representative, and state senator on the ballot for each house district. Within each race in House District 1, except for the race for state senator, the director will place the names on the ballot in alphabetical order, from A to Z For each house district that follows, in ascending numerical order through House District 40, the director will rotate the names on the ballot so that the name at the top of each race in the preceding house district drops to the bottom in the following house district. For the race for state senator, in each odd-numbered house district, the director will place the names on the ballot to follow the order in which letters of the alphabet were randomly drawn under (b) of this section. For each even-numbered house district, the director will rotate the names on the ballot so that the name at the top of the race for state senator drops to the bottom.(g) In the general election, the names of the candidates for United States President will be used to determine the placement for the combined races of United States President and Vice President. The names of the candidates for United States President and Vice President will be placed in alphabetical order on all ballots.
