Section 12 AAC 28.345 - Requirements for course of instruction for administering nitrous oxide
(a) To satisfy the requirements for a certification under 12 AAC 28.325, a course of instruction for administering nitrous oxide must be provided by an organization accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) of the American Dental Association or approved by the board.
(b) To satisfy the requirements for certification under 12 AAC 28.325, a course of instruction for administering nitrous oxidemust include
(1) a minimum of three hours of clinical instruction sufficient to establish the ability to
(A) inspect, operate, and decontaminate nitrous oxide delivery and scavenging systems;
(B) properly induce nitrous oxide sedation; and
(C) recognize and counteract complications;
(2) a minimum of three hours of didactic instruction including
(A) sedation techniques;
(B) physiology of respiration and pharmacology of nitrous oxide;
(C) nitrous oxide machines;
(D) induction techniques; and
(E) complications and their management; and
(3) procedures for determining whether the dental hygienist has acquired the necessary knowledge and proficiency to administer nitrous oxide sedation.
