coverage, providing local-area two-way amateur communications along with un- matched monitoring capability. The VX-3R/E’s incredibly small size allows you to take it anywhere - hiking, skiing, or while walking around town - and its operating flexibility brings the user many avenues of operating enjoyment. Its incredibly tiny FNB-82LI Lithium-Ion Battery Pack provides up to 1.5 Watts of transmit power on VHF, and 1 Watt on UHF. In addition to the 144- and 430-MHz transceiver operation, the VX-3R/E provides receive coverage of the AM (MF) broadcast band, with the internal bar antenna, the FM broadcast bands, HF Shortwave Bands, VHF and UHF TV bands, the VHF AM aircraft band, and a wide range of commer- cial and public safety frequencies! The VX-3R/E internal antenna bar provides good AM broadcast receive capabilities without having to use an external antenna. Additional features include an Enhanced Paging and Code Squelch (EPCS), which allows you to page a particular station and only receive calls from that station. A security Pass- word may be set, which will allow you to turn on and operate your transceiver only after you enter your Password. A convenient key provides access to Vertex Standard’s WIRES™ (Wide-Coverage Internet Repeater Enhancement System). The Emergency Automatic ID (EAI) function can automatically cause your VX-3R/E to transmit your callsign and en- gage your rig’s microphone, even if you are disabled and unable to press the PTT switch. Features include: transmit Time-Out Timer (TOT), Automatic Power-Off (APO), and Au- tomatic Repeater Shift (ARS). Yaesu’s exclusive ARTS™ (Auto-Range Transponder Sys- tem) which “beeps” the user when you move out of communications range with another ARTS™ equipped station. There is provision to reduce the TX deviation for use in areas of high channel congestion. The squelch circuit allows adjusting the squelch to open at a programmable setting of the S-Meter, thus reducing guesswork in setting the squelch thresh- old. VX-3R/E OPERATING M ANUAL SA-25 ® 5 INSTALLATION oF AccEssoRIES ANTENNA INSTALLATION The supplied antenna provides good results over the entire frequency range of the trans- ceiver. However, for enhanced base station medium-wave and shortwave reception, you may wish to connect an external (outside) antenna, as the supplied antenna is very small and cannot be expected to provide high performance at these frequencies. To install the supplied antenna, hold the bottom end of the antenna and screw it onto the mating connector on the transceiver until it is snug. Do not over-tighten by use of extreme force. Notes: 0 Never transmit without having an antenna connected. 0 When installing the supplied antenna, never hold the upper part of the antenna while screwing it onto the mating connector on the transceiver. 0 If using an external antenna for transmission, ensure that the SWR presented to the transceiver is 1.5: 1 or lower, to avoid excessive feedline loss. INSTALLATION OF FNB-82LI BATTERY PACK )i tO t The FNB-82LI is a high-performance Lithium-Ion battery providing high capacity in a very compact package. Under normal use, the FNB-82LI may be used for approximately 300 charge cycles, after which operating time may be expected to decrease. If you have an older battery that is displaying diminished capacity, you should replace the pack with a new one. Installation of the battery is easy and quick: 1. Slide the Battery Cover Latch to the Unlock posi- tion and then slide the Bat- tery Cover toward the bot- tom to remove it 2. Install the FNB-82LI into the Battery Compartment 3. Replace the Battery Cover and then slide the Battery Cover Latch into the "Lock" position. Important Note: There is a small stud in the Battery Compartment of the VX-3RIE. This stud is a switch for the battery detection. Please be careful not to break this stud while changing the battery. 6 VX-3R/E O PERATING MANUAL SA-26 INSTALLATION oF AccEssoRIES BATTERY CHARGING If the battery has never been used, or its charge is depleted, it may be charged by connecting the PA-46 Battery Charger, as shown in the il- lustration, to the EXT DC jack. If only 12 ~ 16 Volt DC power is available, the optional E-DC-21 DC Adapter (with its cigarette lighter plug) may also be used for charging the battery. While the battery is being charged, the display will indicate " CHGING" and the TX/BUSY indicator will glow red The S-meter will deflect according to the charging status. When charging is finished, the display will change to indicate " CHGFUL" and the TX/BUSY indicator will glow green. The PA-46 is only designed for the charging of the VX-3R/E's bat- tery, and is not suitable for other purposes. Please be advised that the PA-46 may contribute noise to TV and radio reception in the imme- diate vicinity, so we do not recommend its use adjacent to such de- vices. Lt. Warning: CHGING D [HGFUL J) Perform the battery charging where the ambient temperature range is +4J °F to +95 °F (+5 °C to +35 °C}. Charge out of this rw1ge cotdd cause dwnage to the battery pack. 2) Jfthe charge is not completed in three hours or if"CHGERR" appears in the display, the battery may be deteriorated. Do not attempt to forcibly charge the battery, Please contact your Yaesu dealer. [HGERR 3) Jfyou do not use the VX-3RIE for a long time, remove the FNB-82LJ Lithium-Jon battery pack from the VX-3RIE, as battery leakage could cause damage to the VX- 3RIE and FNB-82LJ. 4) When an FNB-82LJ Lithium-Jon battery pack is not used for a long time, please remove it from the transceiver. Also, while in storage, the charge will drain slightly over time and the battery should be recharged 50 % each six months. VX-3R/E OPERATING MANUAL 7 SA-27 8/31/2016 Understanding Gross Vehicle Weight Rating - GMC Life http://www.gmc.com/gmc-life/how-to/understanding-gross-vehicle-weight-rating.html 1/1 Follow Us: GVWR: HOW TO KNOW YOUR VEHICLE’S STRENGTH CARRYING PASSENGERS OR CARGO? KNOWING YOUR GROSS VEHICLE WEIGHT RATING HELPS ENSURE YOU DON’T OVERLOAD YOUR VEHICLE. Gross vehicle weight rating, or GVWR, might sound like a term only professional truck drivers are aware of. In reality, it’s an important figure every driver of a GMC pickup truck, SUV and crossover needs to keep in mind in order to remain safe while carrying cargo or passengers alike. Easily found on a label placed inside the driver’s door jamb, the GVWR figure is he maximum weight a GMC truck or SUV is engineered to safely carry. While this figure does not include the total weight of any trailer being towed, it does include he passengers, personal effects, and cargo carried, along with the weight (or the gross vehicle weight) of the truck itself and the tongue weight of he trailer. You may not give much thought about those figures while making short trips or carrying a couple of small items, but when it comes ime to load your GMC with lots of passengers or cargo, it’s important to keep your GMC’s GVWR in mind. Failure to do so may result in you exceeding the GVWR and overloading your vehicle. Overloading your truck or SUV can carry severe consequences, including: Broken springs and suspension components due to excess weight Brakes unable to stop he truck or SUV in a imely manner Transmission and o her driveline components may overheat and sustain serious damage Unusual suspension behavior, making he vehicle hard to control Tire temperatures rising to elevated levels, potentially leading to a blowout Knowing both your vehicle’s gross vehicle weight and gross vehicle weight rating allow you to quickly calculate how much you can safely carry. For example, take a look at he 2016 GMC Sierra 1500 4WD double cab wi h he EcoTec3 4 3L V6. The gross vehicle weight rating for his par icular model is 7,100 pounds . The weight of he Sierra itself is already 5,216 pounds. By subtracting he weight from he GVWR, you can determine this par icular Sierra can carry about 1,884 pounds without exceeding its maximum weight rating. That doesn’t necessarily mean you can universally carry 1,884 pounds of cargo in its pickup box – the weight of passengers wi hin the cab also needs to be factored into he GVWR. If you have two 200-pound passengers climb into hat same Sierra, it now has an available capacity of 1,284 pounds. It's important to always abide by the GVWR specifically set for your GMC truck or SUV. In the course of vehicle development, professional engineers have extensively pushed hese vehicles to heir limits in order to keep you, your passengers, and your belongings safe and to avoid damage to your vehicle. Staying wi hin these limits helps your truck, trailer, and travel remain safe. 1: When properly equipped; includes weight of vehicle, passengers, cargo and equipment. © 2016 General Motors AdChoices 1 SA-28 912/2016 5-0 Radio Police Scanner on the App Store tJ Mac 1Pad 1Phone Watch TV Music Support Q LJ iTunes Preview Overview iTunes is the world's easiest way to organize and add to your digital media collection. (He says he has mastered the skill of ‘‘half listening’’ in his sleep.) Find the department feed you want at broadcastify.com or on a smartphone app like 50 Radio Police Scanner. Though Coleman himself owns a $600 scanner, he mostly tunes in online. Teach yourself to ignore what Coleman refers to as ‘‘the mundane calls.’’ Let the drone of the dispatcher reporting suspiciousperson sightings become background noise. Pay attention if you hear a telltale uptick in chatter; a frenetic shift in tone usually marks a bigger incident, like a homicide. Don’t bother memorizing the old school radio shorthand known as 10 codes. After communication breakdowns during the Sept. 11 attacks and Hurricane Katrina, the federal government urged that 10 codes be phased out in favor of plain speech. Note the circadian rhythms of crime in a place. Cities differ by season. ‘‘The first warm day of spring, absolutely listen to the scanner: shootings will go up,’’ Coleman says. In Chicago, summer nights are always busy, as are the hours after a Bears football game. Mornings tend to be slow. By Coleman’s measure, policeradio calls spike at 3 p.m., when kids get out of school, what he calls ‘‘the most dangerous time.’’ Incidents drop during the dinner hour but climb again in the evening until about 2 a.m. SA-32 8/31/2016 How to Listen to a Police Scanner - The New York Times http://www.nytimes.com/2016/01/03/magazine/how-to-listen-to-a-police-scanner.html?_r=0 2/2 Don’t limit yourself geographically. After the mass shooting in San Bernardino, Coleman went online and heard the gunfight between the shooters and the police. He listened to the scanner while protests erupted in Ferguson, Mo. Eavesdropping on a police department reveals the undercurrents of its culture. Coleman is a law enforcement fan; he listens in part because he wishes he could have been a policeman rather than a salesman for a remodeling company. Still, what he hears often disturbs him: Officers make inappropriate, callous, sometimes even racist comments. ‘‘There’s real tension between people in the neighborhoods and the police,’’ Coleman says. ‘‘You can hear it.’’ Sign up for our newsletter to get the best of The New York Times Magazine delivered to your inbox every week. Auxiliary (AUX) inputs are simple audio connections that look like headphone sockets. Paired with an AUX-IN cable they will allow you to input sound from any media device with a normal headphone socket. They are one of the easiest ways to play music, audiobooks or podcasts in your car. They can also transfer audio from navigation apps or phone calls. Many cars manufactured after 2007 have these fitted as standard. What do they look like? There are two types of AUX inputs in cars: 3.5mm and RCA. They are normally labelled 'Line In' , 'AUX-IN' or 'AUX'. In most cars they are located on in the centre console, armrest or glovebox. 3.5mm AUX-Inputs 3.5mm AUX inputs are the most common type. They look like normal headphone sockets. RCA AUX-Inputs Some cars (particularly Renaults, Peugeots and Citroens) have RCA AUX inputs. These consist of two inputs, each SA-34 http://www.incarcables.com/aux-inputs.php 1/6 9/2/2016 How do I connect to them? AUX Inputs, Tips on Using Your Car's AUX-IN Socket slightly larger than headphone sockets with coloured plastic rings around (normally one white, one red}. To use these inputs you will need a 3.5mm-3.5mm or 3.5mm-RCA AUX-IN audio cable. This cable will go between the headphone socket on your media player and your AUX input. You can get these cables from any good electronics shop. We sell our own lnCarCables range on Amazon.co.uk. They have an excellent reputation and won't break the bank! i. Plug one end of your AUX-IN cable into the headphone socket of your media player. iii. Place your car stereo into AUX mode. (Normally there is an AUX or source button on the radio). Compatibility ii. Plug the other end of the cable into your car AUX-IN socket. (For an RCA AUX input plug in the double RCA end of the cable.) iv. Click play on your media player. Then tum up the volume on your media player to around 75%. Finally adjust your stereo volume as necessary. Will it work with my iPod, iPhone, iPad, smartphone, mp3 player or tablet? Standard AUX cables will connect to any media device with a normal 3.5mm headphone socket (which are fitted to nearly every modern media player). Will it work with my car? To use this method your car must have an AUX input fitted . Many modern cars have these fitted as standard. They are normally located in your car's centre console, armrest or glovebox. http://www.incarcables.com/aux-inputs.php SA-35 216 9/2/2016 AUX Inputs, Tips on Using Your Car's AUX-IN Socket. http://www.incarcables.com/aux-inputs.php 3/6 Functionality Which of my devices' features can I use? AUX inputs can only transfer audio from your media device to your car. This means you will be able to play music, audiobooks or podcasts through your car's speakers. You can also transfer the audio from phone calls and other applications such as Google Maps™ or Spotify. Will I be able to see information from my device on my car display? No. AUX inputs can only transfer audio signals. They won't be able to transfer song titles to your car's display when playing music, or show maps from your navigation app. As a result when using AUX inputs, it may be helpful to still be able to see your phone display (hands-free). Car mounts such as Kenu's portable car mount can help by safely placing your phone in your line of vision on the dashboard. If you use a mount please take care to not allow your device to distract your attention whilst driving. What if I want to make phone calls? The most common way to make phone calls in modern cars is hands-free through Bluetooth®. There is nothing to stop you using AUX inputs for phone calls. If you make or answer a call whilst your phone is connected to the input, the audio from that call will be played through the car's speakers. The phone will then pick up your voice from its inbuilt microphone (which will normally be on a more sensitive setting if the AUX cable is plugged into the phone). You need to be careful not to turn up the volume on the car speakers too much however, as you may get echo / feedback effects from your phone microphone picking up the callers voice being played over the speakers! Please remember it is illegal in the UK to use a handheld mobile phone when driving. Again a mount can help you to use your phone hands-free, but do not allow your device to distract your attention whilst driving. Another option is to add Bluetooth functionality via your AUX input, via devices like Belkin's In Car Audio Connect. This device plugs into your AUX input and 12V socket and then connects to your phone wirelessly via Bluetooth (so your phone can stay in your pocket). It comes with a control button, allowing you to listen (and control your music) or make hands-free calls. What about navigation? Many modern smartphones have built in navigation (or navigation apps from third parties such as TomTom). If your phone is connected to your AUX input then the audio from these apps when in use will be played through your car speakers. You can use a mount so you can see the map in your line of vision. Will I be able to select the music being played using my car's controls? No. With AUX-inputs you will need to select the music being played on the device itself. This may be preferable if a passenger is selecting songs to play. Alternatively you can always set up playlists before you set off. You will however still be able to alter the volume using your car controls. SA-36 9/2/2016 AUX Inputs, Tips on Using Your Car's AUX-IN Socket. http://www.incarcables.com/aux-inputs.php 4/6 Pros Fitted to most modern cars. Simple and easy to use. Universally compatible - will work with any media player with a standard (3.5mm) headphone socket. Control is via your media player, making it easy for passengers to select songs. Can transfer audio from phone calls and other applications such as Google Maps or Spotify. Cons May not be fitted to older car models. Will not integrate with car controls. Will not transfer information to car display. Will not charge your device (but leaves charging socket free). AUX sockets and cables can wear and sometimes will need repairing or replacing. If you want control via your car you will need to use a different connection method like a USB input, Bluetooth, Media inputs or Car Mobile Operating Systems. Will it charge my mp3 player / smartphone? No, AUX inputs are designed to input analogue audio signals to your stereo so they can't charge your device. However because AUX-IN cables connect to the headphone socket of your phone, they generally leave the charging port on your device free. This means there is nothing to stop you charging your device simultaneously. You will need a charging cable and either a USB port or 12V-USB charger. There are lots of options to choose from. What about sound quality? AUX inputs provide a direct audio line into your stereo so the sound quality is normally pretty good. However AUX inputs, like headphones only accept analogue audio signals. This means the conversion of your music files from digital to analogue is done by your music player/ smartphone. Given smartphones are portable, battery-powered devices they are not always the best at doing this. You can read more about sound quality here. Summary AUX inputs are a simple way to play music in your car from pretty much any device. They are close to universally compatible, so if your car has an input you can pick up a cable and get started! InCarCables sell a brilliant range if you need one! They do have some limitations however, particularly given that can only transfer audio signals and will not integrate with your car controls. As a result it is always worth considering other connection options if they are available in your car. In 1999, the Bluetooth SIG released a specification that brought together different types of hardware under one short-range wireless communications protocol. Early Bluetooth-enabled devices included headsets and hands-free car kits. For years, the name Bluetooth was practically synonymous with wireless headsets, which are not just convenient, but often required by law if talking on the phone while driving. Today’s Bluetooth car interfaces help you do a lot more than just talk safely though. Syncing your smartphone(http://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/cell-phones) to your car enables you to accomplish many of your usual tasks through controls designed specifically for use while driving, letting you focus on the road. Contact and Message Syncing Phone Book Access Profile, often referred to in specifications as PBAP or PBA, is the latest protocol in the Bluetooth family for synchronizing contacts between devices. Cars and phones that support this standard can sync your address book to enable your in-car hands-free system to match incoming calls to contact names, display caller photos, and retrieve information for name-based voice dialing. Cars can also handle SMS using the Message Access Profile. Supporting devices enable you to browse, send and receive texts from your Bluetooth device; some devices even read incoming texts aloud automatically. Multimedia Playback For playing music, you’ll want to ensure your devices support the Advanced Audio Distribution Profile, which allows your car to play your music over your car’s stereo system. A2DP also supports the ability to handle audio more intelligently, for instance, to lower music volume during incoming calls. Using A2DP may require you to pair your devices twice, once for hands-free and again for A2DP. Complementing this functionality, the Audio/Video Remote Control Profile handles controlling the playback and passing metadata -- like artist and track info -- between your car and your Bluetooth device. Considerations SA-45 (http://techlife.samsung.com/travel-adventure- photography-tips-1479.html) Travel & Adventure Photography Tips(http://techlife.samsung.com/travel- (http://techlife.samsung.com/6-ways-prep-house- vacation-1952.html) 6 Ways to Prep Your House for Vacation(http://techlife.samsung.com/6- Most cars, phones and car-kits built after 2010 support all these standards, but may require that you grant additional Bluetooth permissions. Consult your owner’s manuals to verify support for these protocols. Remember that both devices must support a profile or you can’t use it. Your car may support even more control of your mobile phone by enabling you to control supported apps via voice or steering-wheel buttons, as the Ford Sync AppLink, the Toyota Entune, or the BMW ConnectedDrive systems do. Support for these features varies by phone and by phone app, so check compatibility (see Resources) if you’re looking for these features. Troubleshooting Different phones have different methods of granting permissions, but the controls are usually found in a detail view of the paired devices. If, after pairing and granting permission for PBAP, your car can not immediately synchronize the address book, turning your phone’s Bluetooth off and then on again may fix the issue. This could happen at first connection when the car doesn’t try to repeat the address book synchronization after permission has been granted. Turning the phone’s Bluetooth off and on causes the car to re-pair and resync. If problems persist, try removing the pairing from one or both devices and pair them again. If you’re still having problems, look for firmware updates supplied by the manufacturers, which may fix the problem.
