Section 64-46-8 - Disinfection8.1. New potable water wells and existing potable water wells being placed into service or that have been disrupted for service or repair, such as new pump installation or reinstallation of an existing pump shall be disinfected. 8.1.a. The following standard disinfection procedure shall be used: 8.1.a.1. Materials which may be used for disinfection are; calcium hypochlorite, sodium hypochlorite, or other materials approved by the Commissioner; and8.1.a.2. Disinfectant shall be placed in the well in quantities that produce a minimum concentration of at least 50 mg/l or parts per million (ppm). The amount required to obtain this concentration shall depend on the casing diameter and the amount of water standing in the well. The solution shall remain in the well for a period of at least 12 hours.8.2. When working with disinfectants in ventilated places, the powder or strong liquid should not come in contact with skin or clothing. Solutions are best handled in wood, plastic or crockery containers because metals are corroded by strong disinfectant solutions.
