Section Saf-C 1308.12 - Heaters(a) Heaters shall be of hot water type.(b) In the event only one heater is used, it shall be a fresh-air or a combination of fresh-air and recirculating air type.(c) In the event more than one heater is used, additional heaters may be a recirculating air type.(d) The heating system shall be capable of maintaining a temperature of not less than 40 degrees fahrenheit throughout the school bus while operating at a 50 percent or greater load capacity at an average minimum January temperature, as established by the U.S. department of commerce weather bureau, for the area in which the school bus is operated.(e) Heater hoses shall be adequately supported to guard against excessive wear due to vibration. The hoses shall not dangle or rub against the chassis or sharp edges and shall not interfere with or restrict the operation of any engine function. Heater hoses shall comply with the requirements of Society of Automotive Engineers standard J20, 06/06. Heater lines, in the interior of the school bus, shall be shielded to prevent scalding of the driver or any passenger.(f) The shut-off valve for the hot water system shall be installed by a body manufacturer in the pressure and return lines at or near the engine.(g) There shall be a water flow regulating valve installed in the pressure line for convenient operation by the driver while seated.(h) Accessible bleeder valves shall be installed in the heater to remove air from the heater lines.(i) Heater motors, cores and fans shall be readily accessible for service.N.H.
