Section V-8705 - Reporting

A. The first step in the control of venereal disease is its rapid identification, followed by notification to the local health authority that a case of disease exists within the particular jurisdiction so that prevention or containment measures can be enacted. These program-related activities are authorized and/or mandated by R.S. 40:1061-1068 and Chapter II of the Louisiana Sanitary Code concerning the reporting of venereal disease. To summarize the codal provisions, it is the duty of every physician practicing medicine in the state of Louisiana to report to the state health officer, through the health unit of the parish or municipality wherein such physician practices, any case of reportable disease (including sexually transmitted diseases) which he is attending. The report shall be made promptly at the time the physician first visits, examines or prescribes for the patient, and such report shall state the name, age, sex, race, place where the patient is to be found, nature of the disease and date of onset. OPPHS does not follow-up private patients unless requested to by or with the permission of the private physicians. Venereal disease records are confidential and every effort shall be made to ensure the confidentiality even in the clinical setting. The authority of the confidential nature of sexually transmitted disease records is contained in R. S.44:3.
