    TSCA/FIFRA/TRIEPA Releases Draft Risk Evaluation For 1,1-Dichloroethane And Draft Hazard Assessment Of 1,2-Dichloroethane For Public Comment And Peer Review:On July 2, 2024, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced the release of the draft risk evaluation for 1,1-dichloroethane (1,1-DCE) and the draft human health hazard assessment supporting the draft risk evaluation for 1,2-dichloroethane (1,2-DCE, also known as ethylene dichloride) prepared under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA). 89 Fed. Reg. 54815. EPA states in its July 1, 2024, press release that it “preliminarily determined 1,1-dichloroethane poses unreasonable risk to human health (of workers) and the environment.” According to EPA, the effects to people from exposure to 1,1-DCE and 1,2-DCE are “kidney and other cancers, as well as harmful non-cancer renal, nasal, immune system, and reproductive effects.” EPA submitted the draft documents to the Science Advisory Committee on Chemicals (SACC) for peer review. On August 27, 2024, SACC will hold a preparatory meeting to consider the scope and clarity of the draft charge questions for the peer review; written comments on the scope and clarity of the charge questions are due on or before noon (12:00 p.m. EDT) on August 23, 2024. On September 17 through 20, 2024, SACC will hold a peer review meeting to consider the draft documents and public comments. Comments on the draft documents are due on or before September 3, 2024.
