NHTSA to Investigate GM Over Ignition Switch Defect
2005 Saturn Ion
On February 10, 2014, GM announced a recall of 619,122 2005-2007 Chevrolet Cobalt and 2007 Pontiac G5 vehicles due to faulty ignition switches that could switch off. It had been reported at that time that at least six people died because of this defect.
Now, GM has recalled an additional 4 vehicle models that have the same type of ignition switch. Additionally, the total number of deaths linked to this recall has doubled. GM has expanded the number of deaths related to 13 and the number of crashes to 31 due to the ignition switch. NHTSA will begin an investigation into GM for failure to pursue a recall when it knew the calls her defective. GM may face fines up to $35 million, which it would be the most NHTSA has ever fined an automobile company. According to USA Today, GM has acknowledged that there were indications of a problem as early as 2004 in the Cobalt model.

The total number of cars recalled is now at 1,367,146. Recently, GM recalled 748,024 additional vehicles. The vehicle models affected are the 2006-2007 Chevrolet HHR and Pontiac Solstice vehicles, the 2003-2007 Saturn Ion vehicles, and the 2007 Saturn Sky vehicles. The ignition defect allows the switch to move from run to accessory while driving if jarred or if pulled by a heavy key chain or an event. This change will shut off the engine and may disable the front air bags.
GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the ignition switch, free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Chevrolet at 1-800-222-1020, Pontiac at 1-800-762-2737 or Saturn at 1-800-553-6000. GM’s number for the initial recall is 13454 and 14063 for the expansion. Note: Until the recall repairs have been performed, it is very important that customers remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the vehicle key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring.
