§ 331b. Organization

The Firefighters Corps shall be headed by the Fire Chief, who shall be appointed by the Governor of Puerto Rico with the advice and consent of the Senate. He shall hold office for a term of six (6) years, or until his successor is appointed.

The Puerto Rico Firefighters Corps shall be composed of the Fire Chief, Assistant Fire Chiefs, Firefighter Commanders, Captains, Lieutenants, Sergeants, Corporals, Firefighters, Auxiliary Firefighters, Volunteer Firefighters and Inspectors. These ranks may be created, consolidated and modified according to the needs of the service.

The Fire Chief shall determine the functional organization of the Firefighters Corps through regulations, and shall establish the chain of command in case of his absence, disability or death. The Firefighters Corps is deemed to be an Individual Administrator, pursuant to the provisions of Act No. 5 of October 14, 1975, as amended, known as the “Puerto Rico Public Service Personnel Act”.
