The Fourth Amendment’s Warrant Clause provides the fundamental 291 check on official invasions of the individual's right to privacy. E.g., Harris v. United States (1947) 331 U.S. 145, 195-196 (lackson, J., dissenting). The United States Supreme Court has tolerated departures from the warrant requirement only when an exigency makes a warrantless search imperative to the safety of the police and of the community.
