Westlaw, Lexis outranked by Casetext on G2

Both Lexis and Westlaw have lost ground on G2 and Capterra, the peer-to-peer review sites where attorneys leave feedback on legal tech and software.

The legal research behemoths are presently outranked on several fronts by Casetext, the legal tech company leveraging advanced AI to make research faster, easier, and more affordable.

Casetext, which boasts a 4.8/5 stars for overall performance, has received a score of 9.7 out of 10 for Ease of Use and Quality of Support for Legal Research, compared to 8.1 and 8.8 for Lexis and 8.7 and 8.6 for Westlaw, respectively.

The rankings are similar on Capterra, where Casetext has a 4.7 for Ease of Use and 4.8 for Customer Service, compared to a 4.4 and 4.3 for Westlaw and 4.2 and 3.2 for Lexis.

Customers describe Casetext as a “game changer,” with many noting the platform’s Parallel Search feature “saves lots of valuable time and is very accurate with [legal research] results.”

Parallel Search is a search engine that allows attorneys to simply type a complete sentence and instantly retrieve relevant case law, rather than trying to construct Boolean queries or guess at keywords. Essentially, attorneys can search the way they think with Parallel Search, making legal research faster and less frustrating.

In addition to ease of use and accuracy, customers also note Casetext offers fair pricing. One reviewer notes: “I don’t get nickeled and dimed for every search that I do,” presumably referencing the out-of-plan fees associated with Lexis and Westlaw plans. Casetext plans are several hundred to thousands of dollars less than Westlaw and Lexis plans.

Casetext offers free, 14-day trials with unlimited access to all databases, including all 50-state and federal case law, statutes, rules, regulations, and more. During a trial, attorneys can streamline legal research with Parallel Search and access numerous other time-saving tools and features.
