Legal Robot Battle 2: Judgment Day

Why there’s a second “Robot Battle” in DC this Monday (and why you should come)

Artificial Intelligence is now the most exciting thing happening in legal research.

It was inevitable.  After Casetext’s pioneering research tool, CARA, won best new product of 2017 at AALL, other companies tried to follow our lead.  The other start-ups came first — Judicata, ROSS, vLex.  But now the big companies finally have caught up with where Casetext was in 2016.  Westlaw, Lexis, and Bloomberg are all announcing CARA-like products at AALL this year.

You might think “all of these companies are now doing the same thing.” In fact, all of our imitators have tried to make their products look very similar to our’s, often starting, as does CARA, with dragging-and-dropping a document into the system.

But despite surface-level appearances, these systems are quite different. And those differences matter to the lawyers and law librarians who rely on these products to do their jobs well. We believe that everyone deserves to understand those differences — to weigh the pros and cons, see the limitations and strengths, and ultimately, decide which product(s) you want to use.

And we think there’s no better way to accentuate the differences than seeing them live, side-by-side, direct from the creators. In an environment where you can ask pointed questions and see the differences that matter on display.

And there’s no reason we can’t have some fun with this!

That’s why we’re hosting our second-ever Legal Robot Battle in Washington DC this Monday. It’s an opportunity for the latest entrants (Westlaw, LexisNexis, and Bloomberg) to take on Casetext — the undisputed, undefeated, original heavyweight champion of AI legal research. It’s an opportunity for everyone to see a real comparison of these technologies, side-by-side, out in the open.

What’s better than watching a good match-up with beer, wings, and friends?

We scheduled it near the Walter E. Washington Convention Center (at the Marriott) at 1:30 pm. I hope you can make it. We’ll live-stream it for everyone not in town.

Here are the details:

When: Monday, July 15, at 1:30pm

Contract Policy Compliance

How this skill works

  • Upload a set of contracts and then describe a policy or set of policies that the contracts should comply with, e.g. "contracts must contain a right to injunctive relief, not merely the right to seek injunctive relief."

  • CoCounsel will review your contracts and identify any contractual clauses relevant to the policy or policies you specified.

  • If there is any conflict between a contractual clause and a policy you described, CoCounsel will recommend a revised clause that complies with the relevant policy. It will also identify the risks presented by a clause that does not conform to the policy you described.

How this skill works

  • Upload a document–e.g. a legal memorandum, judicial opinion, or contract.

Search a Database

Find all instances of relevant information in a database of documents.

How this skill works

  • Select a database and describe what you're looking for in detail, such as templates and precedents to use as a starting point for drafting documents, or specific clauses and provisions you'd like to include in new documents you're working on.

  • CoCounsel identifies and delivers every instance of what you're searching for, citing sources in the database for each instance.

  • Behind the scenes, CoCounsel generates multiple queries using keyword search, terms and connectors, boolean, and Parallel Search to identifiy the on-point passages from every document in the database, reads and analyzes the search results, and outputs a summary of its findings (i.e. an answer to the question), citing applicable excerpts in specific documents.
