For nearly two years, companies that contract with the federal government have been prohibited from discriminating against their employees on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. The same is now true for companies that contract with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, following an executive order signed by Governor Wolf earlier this month. The executive order, which is effective immediately, prohibits all businesses contracting with the state or those receiving grants from the state from discriminating on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression in “subcontracting, hiring, promoting and all other labor matters.”
Companies that currently contract with the state, receive grants from the state, or hope to do so in the future should review their policies to ensure compliance with the executive order.
