Former Vice President Calls for Coal Plant Protests

Former Vice President Al Gore, speaking at the Clinton Global Initiative Annual Meeting, called for protests of new coal-fired power plants that do not use carbon capture and storage technology. At the meeting, Gore said, “If you’re a young person looking at the future of this planet . . . I believe we have reached the stage where it is time for civil disobedience to prevent the construction of new coal plants that do not have carbon capture and sequestration.”He believes that if coal companies can sequester the CO2 safely, then CCS is a technology that can be used, but warned coal companies not to pretend or give the people an illusion that it is possible.Gore also called for a switch to a “new global energy infrastructure” that uses solar, wind and geothermal energy.
